In a racist society, it is not enough to be non-racist, we must be actively anti-racist
Angela Yuval Davis
I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction/Literacy Studies at West Virginia University where I teach both elementary social studies methods and cultural diversity courses. I am passionate about educating pre-service teachers and encouraging them to engage in social justice and anti-racist practices in the K-6 classroom. My primary research interests include examining dialogic spaces for pre- service teachers as a way to explore their racial and ethnic identities and the racial and ethnic identities of others. I look at how these understandings shape pre-service teachers’ ideologies of race and racism, how it influences their teaching practices, and their relationships with students, particularly with students of color. My other interests include how pre-service teachers engage in controversial topics, and consider the marginalized experiences of people of color. Before joining WVU, I earned my PhD from The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Curriculum and Instruction and before that served as an elementary school teacher in both Baltimore City and Washington D.C. Public Schools.
